This unit equips workers, particularly in healthcare and community services, with essential skills and knowledge to respectfully interact with people from diverse social and cultural groups, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities. It focuses on developing cultural competence, crucial for effective communication and safe, non-judgmental care in various settings.

The course covers communication strategies, cultural awareness, safety, and legal responsibilities, enhancing workers' ability to engage effectively and respectfully with diverse populations across industries. It also provides students with an opportunity to reflect on their own social and cultural perspectives and biases. Completing this unit helps workers recognise, understand, and respond appropriately to cultural differences in attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours, promoting inclusive and culturally competent practices in their professional interactions.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour 30 Mins

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Verbal and written English language skills to complete the scenarios and an Incident Report

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate does not require renewal

Practical scenarios:

  • Respect and recognise the needs of people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds in three (3) different situations
  • Select and use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication 
  • Recognise situations where misunderstandings may arise from diversity and formed appropriate responses
  • Deliver an informal information session to new staff reflecting on their own perspectives of diversity

Documentation: 

  • Complete an Incident Report

Theory assessment: A written exam consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions must be completed at the end of the training session. Students must answer all questions.
